I'm looking for input from anyone who has experience in completing the ASTD HPI certificate program. Specifically I'd like to know:
DId you like it and if so, why?
What and how do you use the tools from the program in your organization?
Overall thoughts about HPI in the workplace?

Many thanks!!!

Lisa

I haven't participated in the HPI courses, but I have always found it rather ironic that ASTD (as the leader in education) only offers the programs via instructor-led learning. I'd assume a great deal of the content is knowledge-centered, and perfect for eLearning Confused

Hi Lisa,

Several of the performance consultants at my organization have taken most of the ASTD HPI classes and they seemed to have liked them. I haven't personally taken any and am actually waiting for a potentially new certificate program to be developed in HPT at UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County). I heard that this program might potentially even be offered all online! It will probably be very hands on and will require students to complete several projects, which they can add to their portfolio. I am a current grad student in the ISD department and absolutely love their Distance Education courses! I'm crossing my fingers that they end up developing this certificate program. :-)

Here is a link to the department's website:

Thanks!
Jason

I've taken 4 or the 5 classes and have scheduled the 5th one later this year. I also taught the first class at the University of Michigan Dearborn to graduate education students.

I have found the classes valuable for the following reasons:

1. As a trainer with 15+ years experience, I found it helpful to get (or revisit) the theory behind my methods. It reinforced many of my actions and caused me to rethink others.

2. By attending the classes, I was able to effectively expand my professional network. It was very helpful to get different perspectives.

3. Thoroughly learning the HPI model has helped me stay employed. In tough times, training is sadly one of the first things to be cut back. But following the HPI theory, I have been able to expand my efforts beyond training. I focus on performance. The model has reinforced the need for measurable results which have come in handy more than once as I have been asked to justify the need to keep my department around. I can produce evidence of contributing to my company’s quality policy.

How do I incorporate HPI into my day to day job?

First and foremost, I've adapted the HPI model a bit for my purposes and keep it in my planner., I take it to all of the meetings I attend. Then, when I have to explain why training is not the best approach to a situation ... or when others in the meeting insist on skipping steps (such as defining the original problem in measurable terms), I pull out the model and explain the benefits of following the plan.

I've attached my version of the model.

Do I recommend the HPI courses? Absolutely YES!

Carol
