Hi,

Could anyone recommend the best book(s)/resource on best practices in employee retention. We are trying to lower our employee turnover rate.

Thanks,
Christine

Retention is a result of many, many factors, but you could start with First, Break All the Rules and The War for Talent. JMO

Hello Christine:

I agree with LoveLearning about the book
"First Break All the Rules, what the world's greatest managers do differently." Talent is what separates the top performers from the rest. If you start hiring for talent, retention will increase.

Doesn't that depend on the organizational culture and the ability of leaders to encourage the use of that talent? I've seen many talented people get hired into an organization and then leave shortly thereafter because of an organizational culture that did not encourage and reward that talent. I'm not disagreeing with what you say - just that it might not be that simple.

No.

>I've seen many talented people get hired into an organization<

Is "talented people" another way of saying the best candidates, the most qualified, the most educated or has the right alma mater?

>and then leave shortly thereafter because of an organizational culture that did not encourage and reward that talent.<

Then they did not have the talent necessary for job success. We all have talent but we don't always have the talent demanded by the job we have.

If an employer is not hiring for talent, then hiring for talent will reduce turnover.

Hiring for talent avoids many if not most employee problems.
