Hi, everyone. I'm looking for suggestions on how to list consulting work on a resume. I have had several jobs as an employee over the years but have recently switched to consulting and have done a couple small projects for different clients. Do you list individual projects and clients? Do you describe the type of work you do as you would describe job responsibilities for a salaried job? What if my client is a consulting company, but the end product is for their client--would you list both companies?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Laura:

If you are going to be a consultant, then you should represent yourself as a consultant. What I mean is that in the world of consulting, we often use a professional bio not a resume.

The focus of a professional bio is not all the places you have worked, but on the problems you have solved and the approach taken.

This link will give you some good references so that you can begin to draft your own bio.

Laura, never been asked for a resume. Its a game where repeat busines, word of mouth, networking and selling to needs by listening works. Knowledge in niche markets.

I think Dave has it right with his Bio approach. It's true that most work comes from recommendations, networking etc. However, there is often a requirement to provide a summary sheet or bio of your experience and knowledge to potential clients. It is often good practice to provide this bio at the same time as your proposal to demonstrate previous experience.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info on bios. I am applying for some freelance/consulting/temporary positions, so I do need a resume. Any more tips? I figure there must be others in this situation, or others who are looking for a full-time, permanent position after doing consulting work, and therefore listing consulting on a resume. Thanks again.
