I am an independent consultant (incorporated) specializing in soft-skills training. My corporate insurance policy is up for renewal and, as usual, I'm amazed by the cost!
Earlier posts suggest that cover be 'client-led'. One of my clients requires that I have E&O $500K and General Liability $1m. I have no idea how typical/reasonable this requirement is - can anyone share their expereriences please? Also, my policy specifies me as an 'HR Consultant' which sounds pretty broad to me. I imagine that my soft-skills consulting could have lower exposure/risk than consulting on broader 'HR' issues - but this is just a hunch. Any thoughts? How do other independents describe their role for insurance? All ideas greatly appreciated! Many thanks |

I can only compare this to my UK experience. However, the cover requested seems pretty reasonable to me.
The term HR consultant for cover is probably pretty general. However, you need quite general cover as the things that you advise on will be quite broad. In this situations it is always best to be covered for more rather than less and I would stick with this. Insurance is one of those irritating costs that seem to have no value...until you have to call on it!
