We would like all of our Departments to develop their own list of Core Competencies and the associated scales within each competency. No one in our HR organization is an expert on how best to develop these, so I'm hoping to bring in a vendor to teach "how to develop/identify" meaningful competencies. Does anyone have suggestions? We are located in the NYC area.

Additionally, if anyone has good documentation on the competency development process/cycle, will you please let me know? Train the Trainer materials would be appreciated. Thanks!

After painfully going through this with an entirely over-engineered format that was obsolete the second that the ink dried on the first model I would offer.

1. KISS- really focus on CORE competencies, and don't fragment it with dozens of job families, etc... with unique rating scales.
2. Get your "vision" of what this should be to the best of your ability (no matter how imperfect) concretely on paper before engaging a vendor
3. Know how/why you will use competencies

Too many folks use vendors to determine these things, and surprisingly the offerings drive the business decisions versus the business driving the vendor offerings. I know it's a bit daunting because it is tough work, but you always want to be in the driver's seat.

Just my 2... seen it go far too often the wrong way.

I recently went through this process with my department and my organization as a whole. We went through a "card sort" process with everyone in the department. This was key to gaining buy-in for the competencies. One note of caution: be sure to schedule enough time for this process and have a clearly identified method for decision making.

I can walk your organization through this process or talk to you about it if you like. My email is annsmith@amstraining.net
