Can anyone pls provide me w/ a gen rule of thumb about how many pages (in an ILT) can be taught 1 hour.

There is no "rule of thumb." It is completely dependent upon the content of the course. I'm not even sure what you mean by "pages" per hour.
What is your goal in asking this question? Perhaps exploring what you are looking to achieve can help us explore possibilities with you. |

I, too, am puzzled by this question. Learning/helping people learn isn't about pages per hour...

yes I agree and was puzzeled by the request of my colleague. my response was the same as yours in that it is wholely dependent upon course content; however, my manager wants to entertain the notion that there must be some information [generally] about how many pages of content can be delivered in a four hour block of ILT. what i can add is the material is targeted to automotive repair techs; my area of specialty is technology training which do have rules of thumb about how long it may take to cover a 'screen'--totally different from fixing an engine, eh. any guidance is appreciated...

I agree that "minutes per page" or "minutes per slide" is not in and of itself all that useful. Learning is what's important.
That said, when I design didactic sessions that use slides. I generally figure: - three minutes per slide - four minutes if you have a word slide and a picture slide displayed simulateously - I do not count "index" slides - this is above an beyond exercises, discussions, workshops, etc. I use these numbers only in planning the course so I avoid the temptation of trying to deliver six hours of content in four hours... After using this in initial planning, and after figuring in discussions, etc. I tend not to use the numbers. However, I tend to only use very short segments of traditional didactic instruction these days, so the rule of thumb is just that and it does not apply to the other four fingers (other 80%) of the events. --john |
