I created this from a variety of sources... it's a "Densa" test. I usually have them take the test individually, then ask the questions to the group.

1. Do they have a 4th of July in England?
2. How many birthdays does the average man have?
3. Some months have 31 days; how many have 28?
4. How many outs are there in an inning?
5. Is it legal for a man in Illinios to marry his widow's sister?
6. Divide 30 by 1/2 and add 10. What's the answer?
7. If there are 3 apples and you take away 2, how many are there?
8. A doctor gives you three pills, telling you to take one every half hour. How many minutes would the pills last?
9. A farmer has 17 sheep, and all but 9 die. How many are left?
10. How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the ark?
11. A clerk in the butcher shop is 5'10'' tall. What does he weigh?
12. How many two cent stamps are in a dozen?
13. A plane crashes on the Canadian/US border. In which country do you bury the survivors?
14. What is the least amount of coints it takes to make 55 cents if one of the coins is a quarter?

Scroll down for answers....

1. Yes. It's after the 3rd of July
2. One
3. All of them
4. Six (three per side)
5. No - he's dead
6. 70 (30/.5=60)
7. 2, you took them, remember?
8. 60 (you start by takin gthe first pill then, 30 minutes later you take the second pill, 30 minutes later the 3rd)
9. 9
10. zero - it was Noah
11. Meat
12. hmmm... bury them alive?
13. 3 - two quarters and a nickel

Scoring (depending on the group, I don't always provide a scoring method):
13 - 14 Genius
10 - 12 Above normal
7 - 9 Normal
4 - 6 Slow
1 -3 Idiot
0 brain dead

There is a really good listening skills exercise that I use called 'Little Grey Rabbit' it goes like this..

Say to the group: I want you to think of an animal and give it two descriptions, for example, a sexy, spiky hedgehog. What you need to do is go to another member in the group and pass on your animal to them and then collect their animal, you then keep doing this until you’ve passed animals to everyone in the group.

You are only allowed to say the animal and it’s description once, if you can’t remember what was said then when you go to pass the animal to the next person you must say ‘can’t remember’. Or if you remember parts of it say, blank, hopping, blank.

Once the participants have completed the exercise ask each participant to give you the name of the animal they currently have in their head (i.e. the one just passed to them) and write it on a flipchart. Then go round and find out the animals that everyone initially had. The animals rarely tally with the originals.

Close the session by saying...

This is a simple exercise, but only (xx) animals survived. So, what went wrong?

This exercise is used by RADA acting school to help improve the listening skills of their actors.

This is how I heard this one: You start pointing to things that are white and ask what color it is. Then ask what do cows drink and most people will say milk because it associates it with the "white".

You can go as long as you like. I usually stop after 4 stops. The learners are usually busy trying to add / subtract things. Then I end by saying, "And now the important question. What's the name of the bus driver?" Very few get the answer. Answer = "You" or their name.

Another one I used, but I can only remember 1/2 of it. I need help from others out there happens to do with a cow. It goes something like. "What is ice cream made out of?" Answer: milk. "What do babies drink?" Answer: milk. "What do cows drink?" Normally they will say "milk." Again, can't remember how to set it up completely. Just remember the punch line, "What do cows drink?"
