What are any of you doing (current trends) when training either clients or employees on mainframe, web-based applications or other systems...is it done with PowerPoints, screen captures or are there other methods and tools?
HELP!

For low tech you can use breeze, which is basically a PPT with audio. You can pretty much use anything that your server will allow. it really depends on the content and your goals and capabilities.

Also, Camtasia is pretty good for producing screen shot videos. You basically get a video screen capture with audio, so the user can see exactly what should be happening on screen, step by step in video and with audio. They can open the application in another window and work along as well.

Hi Susan... Whether delivered online or facilitated in a classroom, students need to have their hands on the computer and have as many opportunities as possible to actually practice with the software.

Could you explain your question about PowerPoints and screen captures? I'm not sure I understand the context for that.

It depends.

If it's a simple task- generally a job aid they can use as they attempt task is adequate (sorta like the sticker on the side of a fire extinguisher).

If it's a task with a bunch of screens, but basically linear, a simple simulation can work.

If it's a complicate process, generally has to have hands on experience with mediator (via web conference or live classroom) who can intervene.

One size won't fit all- and culture plays a HUGE part (we have folks in our org who won't learn something unless they are in class- sorta like how my DVD player still flashes "12:00")
