If the audience already knows a bit about the subject and so they already are not looking forward to the boring subject they will be sceptic right from the start. So what you need to do, is to start the course with Hollywood opening scene just to get them interested. Once they are hooked they will be in the anticipation of what happens next and forget that it was a boring subject in the first place.

Of course this opening scene requires a bit of imagination and creativity which is what makes the difference between a standard course and a great course that we remember for a long time to come. I still remember certain highly educational and entertaining lectures and talks I have attended even after 10 years, just because they were delivered to spectacularly and the subject was turned into something new.
