Anyone know a source for a general frequency of presentation to maintain classroom instructor qualification? Is presenting once a year enough to maintain qualification - twice - or once a quarter?

Thanks!

NukeJohn,

I think you may be asking the wrong question. Maintaining instructor qualification is not a matter of how many times they present in a year. It's a matter of what they DO to maintain their qualifications during that year. No matter how well instructional skills are at any given time, the skills eventually will decay without continuing reinforcement. Just "presenting" doesn't work.

In the best scenario, the instructors will be certified as instructors. Otherwise, you probably won't have any criteria by which to evaluate them - which is absolutely necessary if they are to maintain their qualifications as presenters. Certification should require that instructors attain a certain level of proficiency in not only teaching, but also in planning, managing, and evaluating activities of training. Many companies require that instructors be re-certified every year. They should be held accountable for things like the following:
1. Regularly meet with other instructors to share training issues and concerns and help resolve problems.
2. Work with other instructors on cases studies (observe or videotape trainers during delivery) to achieve interrater reliability among instructors.
3. Take specified courses to improve their own technnical knowledge and professional competence to maintain their certification.
4. Take an active part in constructing and evaluating courses they teach.
5. Participate in creating and maintaining a system to track problems, noting when, where, and how they occur.
6. Continually perform needs analyses.

All good stuff +
    7. Use existing company (or develop your own) self-evaluation form....and use it!
    8. Seek feedback from other trainers - (time permitting) ask them to sit in on your sessions as an observer.
    9. Analyse the amount of time you are spending on planning, delivery, evaluation & providing feedback
    10. Analyse who contributes to setting (& evaluating) the learning objectives and how their contributions are made
    11. Which training methods do you use most/least and why is this?

.....someone else please add to (and/or comment on) these suggestions.

I would be very interested to know what you used when you first qualified the individual as an instructor.
