I have an instructor who needs to take a certificate program in instructor training. I see ASTD's program, of course, and Langevin's, but this instructor is in Florida, and may need something before the ASTD workshop in Orlando is given.

Any suggestions?

I was very pleased with the Langevin classes and would recommend them if your organization has the budget for it.

An organization I used to work for required all of its trainers to attend the Bob Pike class on training. It wasn't my cup of tea but a lot of people felt it was helpful.

Good Luck!

Dave Meier's Accelerated Learning Workshop. It should be a standard across the board.

Please be very clear on what it is this instructor needs to "get" and the reasons why this instructor doesn't have it now. If it's just a title (ie: a certificate) than you've got lots of options--as long as they're considered worthy/relevant certificates by the evaluator.

If it's a particular skill set then you need to be clear that the course you're looking at focuses on those skills. For instance, I love Bob Pike's work on interactivity and using alternatives to lecture....ISD not so much. In my experience (including ASTD and Langevin) there is no one-stop shop out there than you can sheep dip a bad or novice instructor-to-be in and have them emerge as a good. Because it depends on what areas they need work in.

Finally, there is the issue of "why" this is a problem for this instructor. If I do a lousy job engaging participants, don't assume that a class will solve that. My failing/weakness may not be due to a lack of knowledge or skill but due to other causes (in which case the class will fail).

Thumper,

Given the sense of urgency it sounds like what you seek is a learning event with real skill building opportunities included. (ASTD's Training Certificate Program provides more of a survey of the landscape.)

You might want to step back and narrow that list to some specific behaviors/comps you are after...otherwise your instructor may enjoy an interesting course but not come away with the needed skill set.

Post those skills here and you might get more focused suggestions.
