My apologies if this has been covered already, but I am looking for resources for writing objective based post training evaluations. I have just ordered the ASTD InfoLine on the topic, but was wondering what others in the group have found useful.

Scott,
Sorry for the late reply. Are you talking about an evaluation of individual performance following a training event.....or an evaluation of the actual training by the participants....or? |

Evaluation of individual performance post class. I believe that it may be referred to as a Level 2 assessment.

Scott,
Could be wrong here but it sounds like you are talking about more of a Level 3 type assessment. Here's why.... Level 1 looks at Reaction (by the participant)to the training. Level 2 Looks at Learning (by the participant) and is normally part of a pre/post test scenario. If you conducted a pre-test you already have what you need for the post test. If you did not conduct a pre-test you have no basis for comparative purposes. Level 3 looks at Behavior (transfer of the skills into the workplace). This gets at your "Evaluation of individual performance post class. From an individual development perspective this is (my opinion)where you receive the best bang for your evaluation buck. And, this particular level compliments the developmental aspects of performance improvement (coaching, management support, rewards/recognition...et al). For this particular level I encourage my customers to create a series of items (questions)that focus on the specific behaviors the learning event is intended to improve. The approach asks for feedback from managers-supervisors-peers-etc...people in a position to have observed the behavior. I also ask participants,in a separate survey, the extent to which the organization is supporting the new behaviors and practices. This post-training support piece gets to the heart of why training often fails (I can send you sample questions if you wish). Can also link-up on-line (computer-to-computer)and walk you through some basic survey construction techniques. -------------------------------------------- A few nice resources on Kirkpatrick: http://coe.sdsu.edu/eet/Articles/k4levels/index.htm http://community.astd.org/eve/forums?a=tpc&f=5401062&m=...&r=53510064#53510064 |
