All,
What is the average instructional design/development hours for 1-hour of Instructor Led training versus 1 hour of Web Based Training. I was originally told that 40 hours of development time was needed to develop one hour of ILT training. Is this number still accurate? Any help is appreciated! |

Well, this is not a complete answer, but it is a good starting point: http://brandon-hall.com/bryanchapman/?p=7
I find the ILT number pretty darn close. There are lots of variables including type of exercise (workshop, immersion, computer software hands-on, scavenger hunt), lecture/debriefing styles, etc. I also think that short programs (1 - 2 hours) take more time per hour than multi-day programs, but that's probably just me... For all media consider time for design, development, editing, pilots, and so forth. For instance, for a four-day ILT course, I generally have a planning meeting (2d), a test with just team members present (4d) and a pilot (4d). I do not know whether or not you include this in the development time at your organization. Surely the time between the test and pilot where content is revised is included Regardless of medium you will still have time for needs analysis, promotion, team meetings and the like. These may not be included in the design and development times in the article. I don't know. I would use the times as a guide, not a baseline. HTH, --john |
