I'm searching for a reference tool (book, website) to assist an experienced ILT designer identify the basics of E-Learning--such as the terminology and tools available.

Specifically, I'd like the tool to outline the various types of E-Learning tools/media (like captivate, breeze, etc.) and the appropriate types of instruction and capabilities of the media. For example "Tool x is great for this and terrible for that.."

I realize this may be a pie-in-the-sky wish list--so any suggestions or recomendations for a new e-devloper would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've been in your position and found the eLearning Guilds 360 reports to be helpful. They cover a range of subjects.
