As we begin offering web-based training, we are thinking of letting our trainees choose whether to complete a given module either online or in a classroom.
We would like our pilot projects to minimize any barriers/concerns that our employees might have about e-learning.
We plan to ask them what those barriers might be.
We'd also be grateful to hear from any of you who could tell us your thoughts about factors that have discouraged your trainees from choosing or completing online training.
Thanks for any ideas you can share.

Kathy,

Many people will say the human factor is a reservation. They will be skeptical that web-based training will deliver the same engagement. But a well-designed course can really surprise you.

Other reservations might involve technology. Others might just want to get out of the office and not take a course from their desk.

Again, if your courses are engaging and bring value/meet the objectives, even the naysayers can be won over.

Good luck with your projects,

Jay

Number one reason for me? Most e-learning stinks. If you want me to read information, give me a book or a PDF file so I can print it out, mark it up, etc.. Please, lord, do not make me sit through yet another glorified powerpoint presentation. It's bad enough when they do that in face-to-face training and call it "training"... but at least there, I can ask questions and discuss things with the teacher and fellow learners.

I've heard this sentiment (in so many words) from many a soul who came away from the e-learning machines in a glazed stupor.

Reasons why employees do not complete an online training program:
- The 'what's in it for me' is not clear
- Course is extremely passive
- No research is done to identify prior knowledge, learning styles, learner motivation, learner background
- No motivation to learn
- Instructional interactivity is extremely low
- Belief that classroom training is more effective
- Content presented does not show direct application
- Does not allow the learner to experience for themselves
- Courses designed for everyone which actually caters to no one

These are some of the reasons why employees drop out before completing a training program.

Cheers,
archana

ok..here's my 2 cents

It may seem obvious, but it is not uncommon for companies to launch an e-learning initiative without being certain that the have the technology infrastructure in place to accommodate their new e-learning program.

The trainees themselves are likely to be somewhat fearful of e-learning at first, and running into technology problems may prevent them from buying-in to this new method of training delivery

It's kinda like a culture shock for the first timers in elearning..
