Hi, There!
I have about 3 years experience as an eLearning Developer. All of my learning to date has been on the job. I'd like a more formal education. Does anyone have any advice as to what type of degree program I should look for? I can't seem to find anything. Please help! |

You might check out San Diego State and Bloomsburg University in PA. Most others are instructional design and maybe a few instructional tech.
True, high-end e-learning development is more about experience and talent with the tools of the trade, though. That's if you're wanting to create better content, and not just get a better job (not that there's anything wrong with that). Sheldon Murphy Solid State Learning www.sslearn.com |

Thanks for your suggestion! Idealy I would like to get ahead in my career by creating better content. I think they both go hand in hand not one without the other. Thanks again!

Megan,
Keep in mind that ASTD offers a number of certifications in elearning and blended learning. They are offered around the country, and I believe they're offered online as well. If you're looking for the "credibility" that certification or classes may give you, that might be a place to start. Just an idea. *I'm taking one in a month or so, if I think about it I'll post back to let you know what I think of the experience. I think your having the actual hands-on experience and being able to show your work will be the thing that does you the most good -- three years of elearning experience with a number of different programs is very desirable now. One other idea, what about an instructional design certificate? There are a number of different certification programs vs. just colleges that offer those. Best of luck! |

Thanks Ellie!
I've completed both the Instructional Design Certificate as well as the E-Learning Certificate offered through ASTD. My problem that I'm having is that I'm 22 with great experience, but no real formal education to back it up. My fear is that if I find myself having to leave my current position no one will want to hire me without a degree. Do you think a degree in Technical Communications would be sufficient enough since I have the technology experience? I appreciate your input! |
