Like Dvsnhd99 said, check out Jay Cross--informal learning is his area of research.
I can tell you that I have used informal learning approaches and saved millions of dollars. If Jay's numbers are to be believed, and I do, 80% of our learning is informal: stories at work, watching a co-worker, reading a memo or manual, etc. Which means that 20% of our learning is formal; yet 80% of the training budget is spent on the FORMAL training. In a nut shell, Jay advocates realigning the spending . Sun Microsystems did this and we created what is now known as the Sun Learning eXchange. This platform allowed any employee to post content as a video, podcast, or pdf. The rating was done by peers--so poor content was voted down the topic list. By investing in tools to allow employees to develop training and providing a place to post it we moved countless demands for short classes off of the ID team and into the hands of the SMEs. My experience was that this was a great approach and I have no hesitation in recommending it to you. P.S. Before we had the Sun Learning eXchange operational we used a wiki platform to hold the content--of course it did not stream video well--but it was usable. |
