I am developing a policy for what material can be posted to our LMS. Much of what people request is not training/education, but a re-hash of policies that are available on our intranet. Managers think this is a great way to track who has read a policy, but it takes up too much of our limited resources to do this. If you have a policy in place, could you please share? Thanks in advance.

Training that is required for legal compliance should be in the LMS, training that a manager wants to put in the system because it is a nice to have should not be--unless there is a vetting process that can review the content and ensure there is value and a large enough audience.
Looking at this a different way... If managers are wanting to have training that is a rehash of "policies that are available on our intranet" it may be symptomatic of a need for a basic policy/procedures training. Something to consider. Dave |

Being in the business that recommends LMS products to customers, I see this frequently. While such 'document tracking' isn't training and falls outside the purpose of the LMS, it's not a bad idea in itself necessarily.
Of course, if you don't have the resources one way or another to handle these requests, then that's a problem! One option would be to setup a simple site through something like SharePoint which could possibly track when folks accessed a document, or some other simple method of file access via an internal website. Otherwise, if you simply want a policy to point managers to, that seems simple enough. I don't have one to share but would seem a plain "The LMS is intended for critical eLearning courseware use only. Unrelated requests like document tracking are not supported." would seem workable ;-) CM |
