My company is launching a required e-learning module. What should we expect for a completion rate?

Thanks!

Not trying to be flip, but if it's *required* then the expectation is that everyone completes it.

Am I missing something?

What does "required" mean to you if not "everyone must complete this?"

I understand where you are coming from but in my experience even with a required training it is challenging to push all employees to comply. Unless there is a penalty which we may not be imposing.

I am wondering what others have experienced in this scenario.

SarahTJ, I am not sure I understand what "required" means if there is no penalty. I would think that in this economy if the choice were elearning course vs termination, most people would choose the former Smiler

I used to work for an employer where not participating in required events meant no annual raise.

IMHO, you need to decide what "required" really means in your organization. If it really means "please take this" and the users cannot see the WIIFM I do not think you should expect more than a single digit response. If they can see the WIIFM either in the training or potential sanctions, the response rate will likely be very good.

Is there something driving the "required" aspect of this? If so, do you have executive support? If so, use it.

"The CEO wants you to do this" works surprisingly often, especially if they know that reports are being sent up the line. You don't necessarily have to state what the punishment for non-completion will be (though that helps) - sometimes knowing that everyone from your supervisor on up will know of your inattentiveness to a important initiative is enough.

We have multiple required courses for which we get 99-100% completion because there is executive follow-up, and we're a very large corporation.

Without that, your completion rate depends primarily on your culture. What's motivating your employees to take this? Something intrinsic? You'll probably get a completion rate of 60-75%. Something extrinsic without consequence? 25% could be a high expectation.

Really though, that's all whistling in the dark, since we don't have a clear sense of your culture and the drivers and support for the training.
