I want to add marginal interactivity into my page-turner/screen capture based program. I was contemplating allowing learners to roll over certain bolded words in the body of the web page and have highlights appear on a screen-capture of a software package. The intent is to have the novice learner associate the software package's commands with certain parts of the screen.

Any suggestions on the best/easiest/cheapest ways to build this?

I am biased towards Flash for creating interactive components. Yes, it expensive and has a "learning curve", but I have used it for nearly 15 years and love it.

You might peruse other forum topics on this site for cheaper alternatives. Finding software that exports to SWF format is probably desirable, depending on what package you are creating your course in.

I agree with Amy. I have developed several Captivate courses in the past in which I have used the rollover feature.

Lectora by Trivantis is a great contender. It is like PowerPoint on steroids. It has a mild learning curve. A beginner can produce something like you are talking about fairly quickly. Pls free to contact me for more info.
