As a trainer, I have evaluated my training classes and participants' performance. Now, I am in the position of developing/promoting an established training program. Although I have ideas about areas where the program can develop and grow, I would like to conduct an analysis of where we are now, opportunities, etc. It seems overwhelming. Can someone help me get started as a newbie?

Remekalt,
When a client asks me about targeting and growing their learning activities I recommend they conduct a needs assessment. In short, you are seeking to discover any gaps or disconnects between performance expectations and the existing learning opportunities on the books. This doesn't need to be complicated. In many cases it is more house cleaning and redecorating than anything else. Take a look at the company's goals/objectives/mission/values. Look at job descriptions. Then look at the current inventory of learning activities (workshops, mentoring, coaching...etc). What you will immediately discover is that there are courses offered that link up to nothing current. They may have been relevant years ago...but are simply still there using valuable resources. Cleaning these out makes room (and frees up resources) for relevant material (your goal). Then, consider using survey tools to gather 360 feedback on various levels in the organization. The data is useful for the individuals receiving the feedback and, to your specific question, you can set them up to disclose trends across the enterprise. Jeff |
