As a present faculty member at a Corporate University (also an outside consultant), I can say that alignment with top management is a key issue. Getting the right input on KPIs (key performance indicators) is essential. We're in our third year now with a relatively new corporate university staff. All of the instructors (faculty) are external consultants. So getting the right people together is challenging.

I found this book very helpful: The Corporate University Workbook: Launching the 21st Century Learning Organization.
