Bob - Just what I need - someone insisting that others hand over their free time when they don't wish to put in any themselves. The point I'm trying to impart is that there is no magic bullet or answer that you're insisting people give you. The request for the data begs the question. It assumes this is even a good way to measure anything in the first place. It's all in the tie-in between learning to a specific business goal and whether or not its appropriate to put that learning online in the first place. Just because it's cheaper to put Thisamazingclass 101 on the LCMS than ship everyone to a central location for face-to-face learning, does not mean it has good return on investment in the end. (For example - usually particularly true when it wasn't appropriate to deliver the content online in the first place.) You can't pit the two delivery modes against each other and accurately demonstrate ROI that way. Just because someone asks for certain data doesn't necessarily mean one should turn around and provide it as though it actually proves anything. And, as I've explained in many different threads -- most "soft" skills training does not transfer well to so-called "e-learning" This message has been edited. Last edited by: LoveLearning, |

Great answer LoveLearning! That pretty much says it all. As with most things worthwhile it bears repeating again and again.

LoveLearning, you've (obviously) invested too much of your valuable time in trying to tell me that you don't have an answer to my question. If you'll re-read my postings, I was looking for a few peoples' rule of thumb, and instead I get a tongue lashing.
This isn't rocket science, although many people like to make it so. If I ran the numbers for every project I was looking to implement I'd have paralysis by analysis. Of course I and my staff can calculate an excruciatingly accurate ROI, but that's not what I was after, which is why I stated I needed a WAG. I'm not at the detailed ROI stage yet. B-school 101: Do a litmus test before you invest the time to perform due diligence. You know, rule of thumb, a simple one-line answer such as "20 hours of development time for one hour of delivered material", without working through an entire ROI calculation. I needed the number as a ballpark talking point, not as an exact figure. You seem to presume, LoveLearning, that my MO is to take up other peoples' time rather than spend my own. Quite the contrary. If I'm looking for a down and dirty rule of thumb, then the assumption is that somebody out there must have at one time or another looked for the same thing, and might have one. That's the point of these bulletin boards, to exchange information, not to chastise members for why they're on the BB in the first place. if you don't have an answer, then don't respond. Simple. Anyway, no hard feelings. However, I would appreciate it if in the future you'd answer my questions more directly and in the spirit they were intended, rather than take offense and lecture me on a process I'm all too familiar with. Such is the hazard of being a trainer - pontification. |

My rule of thumb for "seat time" saved desktop with audio vs ILT: No time saving.
