I guess I see this from a different perspective. Maybe "he" isn't the problem. Maybe "he" makes the other trainers feel inferior. Perhaps coming from "outside" and having other experiences, his ideas and suggustions makes the others feel they aren't as good as they thought they were.

Also just because they don't "get" what he is saying and then when the "Manager" presents it they get and are enthusiastic about the idea makes me think maybe they are "brown nosers".

Instead of focusing on just the one person, sounds to me like maybe the others could use some "training", too.

Hi Mary -- I agree with you at least as far as the need to examine the entire picture and not just this one guy's behavior. I believe that at least a couple of us have been trying to suggest that it's not just he who is the issue.

I look forward to hearing back from the original poster.

I've located a previous manager of the training team; one who managed the old-hats in the past. Behold! The same problem has existed for some previously "new" trainers. It seems that one of our old-hat trainers has had problems with new employees in the past. I was intent on not repeating efforts that failed, so I sought some outside advice on what "didn't" work in the past. The old-hat has an old school philosophy of "What the boss says, goes" and the newer training additions, which I have hired, are far more creative and aggressively contributory. It's a mixture of issues I'm learning.

The Q&A went well with him. He's aware of the communication problems, and is taking an active role in making changes. I approached it from a sales perspective and he easily saw the comparisons. Consistency will be his challenge.

The old-hats will have to adjust to my concept for the group's design process. It may be as simple as me demonstrating reward for creative contribution and not rewarding conflict. We shall see.

TRNG,

Simple with the "old hats", they may know something that makes them qualify as old hats. Reinforce the overall strategic training plan and their role(s) in it. don't make it a contest be careful.

AHA!!!! Sorry you're experiencing this TRNG, but I can't help but feel vindicated by the fact that the issue wasn't all on this new guy having an "ego" or "hard head"
