At my last company, we had this problem as well. Here's what we did to correct the problem in less than one month:

1. Establish attendance guidelines and communicate them to employees. Our guidelines were that you would be allowed to enter class up until 5 minutes after the class started.

2. When an employee shows up late, turn them away. Our guidelines also stated that the EMPLOYEE has to report immediately to their manager to explain why they were late for class. The manager could then reschedule them into a future class.

3. ALWAYS start each class and return from breaks/lunch on time. To Kelly's point, we had to teach to an empty room a couple of times. However, we did not repeat information and there was typically either a knowledge-based or performance-based test after class was complete. So, whatever they missed, they missed.

It really worked like a charm. However, everyone has to buy in and stay committed.

Thanks.

This has become the year's runaway winner for the most viewed post.........plus it didn't get closed by the moderators so it seems we can all exchange banter on this common ground without resorting to fisticuffs in cyberspace......seems we may have chosen to redirect our anger at those who don't turn up on time!

In the spirit of the holiday season.....perhaps the more fitting punishment is to have them listen to Jose Feliciano's rendition* of "Feliz Navidad" on an endless loop tape.

*did anyone else even have a rendition? Or is "rendition" now a word we can't use without firing up a conversation about the pros and cons of relocating people of interest to foreign countries with more relaxed interrogation rules.
