The 9-box grid is used to assist in evaluating your organizations talent pool. The 9-box is comprised of an X axis (horizontal line) of 3 boxes that assesses employee’s leadership behaviors or potential (you decide)and a Y axis of 3 boxes (vertical line) that assesses employee’s performance. The Y axis (performance) is typically plotted with information from a performance management system or other perfromance scores; the X axis (leadership/potential) is more subjective and based on qualitative assessment. A combination of Y and X axis makes up the box within the grid that the employee is placed.
1A - High Perfromance/High Potential/Leaderhsip 1B - High Performance/Mid Potential/Leadership 2A - Mid Performance/High Potential/Leadership 1C - High Perf/Low Potetential/Leaderhship 3B - Low Performance/Low Potential etc... |

I've been using the performance and potential matrix to assess leadership talent for years now and it's proven to be a very effective tool. It's especially useful when used to facilitate a discussion with a senior leadership team - a great way to get everyone on the same page.
Take a look at my blog post to learn how to use it: Gtreat Leadership by Dan[/URL] |

I’ve just posted a series of articles on my blog on how to use the leadership performance and potential matrix to determine the best leadership development strategy:
Using the Performance and Potential Matrix to Determine the Best Leadership Development Strategy Although there are nine boxes in the matrix, I find it more practical to group talent into four categories, each requiring a different leadership development strategy: 1. A players, or hi-pos. Leaders in boxes 1A, 1B, and 2A, usually about 10-20% of any population. Leadership Development for a Players 2.B players. The bell curve majority of any group that can't be neglected. Leadership Development for B Players 3. C players, or underperformers. Leadership Development for C Players? 4. New leaders. Just promoted into a position, with no previous leadership experience, too new to rate. |
