Hello, I'm looking for input or advice on revamping our current management training program. The company is a $1.5 billion dollar bank with about 430 employees. We have a management trainee program that is dated and hasn't been in place for about 2 or 3 years. It was mostly a visit to each department to see what they do, and much time spent in the branch learning operations and procedures, and lasted for 6 months. I've began researching Management and Leadership Development Programs, and found some great starts, but I'm looking for other financial institutions who have a program in place. I'm looking to find out if you provide tracks for specific positions (i.e. a track for an employee to develop into a commercial lender versus a branch manager) or do you simply have a program that rotates for specific periods of time in different departments and locations regardless of the position? Any response is appreciated!

We have worked with other financial institutions to develop branch managers (WaMu, BB&T, State Farm, National City Mortgage).
See http://www.prisim.com/Services/ReadytoRun/Cycloan.htm The primary context that we've worked in has been mortgage banking or insurance, but there might be similarities to your situation. |

Chase,
My initial response to your posting is that you should take the person's traits, skills and values into consideration when looking at progression. IMO, there should not be a rule that someone progresses from Position A to Position B. It should be based on many factors. A true Management/Leadership Program is MUCH more than just a career-path. You mention 'learning operations and procedures' - no offense but that is not a Management Program. A true Management/Leadership program is a mix of first understanding the people in your organization, understanding how to motivate them, Communication, Human Performance, etc. This message has been edited.
