Can anyone tell me what competencies they measure individuals at the executive level on? And how did you go about determining what competencies to use?

Look on the Center or Creative Leadership website. Look at their newsletters. They do a poll each month and several of them have to do with Leadership practices and competencies? The polls should give you some ideas.

Another good place for leadership competencies based on research is a great book "The Extraordinary Leader" by John Zenger and Joseph Folkman. They list 16 competencies that make the difference between ordinary/extraordinary leadership. You probably won't want to use them all, but it is a place to start. You could test the list against both those leaders who are very successful in your organization (what competencies do they excel at), as well as have your executives evaluate and maybe "vote" as to which they think contribute most to success. I've done a card sort activity to do this before.

One of the most researched approaches to executive competency development is that of Lominger.com. You can also find a great model and developmental resources in Personnel Decision Inc.'s Successful Executive Handbook.
