I think that definite career paths do not exist anymore. For instance, now Finance and Marketing backgrounds are also being valued in HR roles because they bring with them business sense which enable HR to become stategically aligned etc. I wouldn't recommend that you look for a model; instead you should go case by case. Promising a career to someone has more cons then pros.
Identification and application of competencies at any given level is a relatively better way which can help the organization recognize who is ready to move up a level, rather than a position/designation. Also, you need to look at the performance of an individual, potential for growth, results achieved in challenging roles/projects etc. Hence, if someone asks what will it take for me to become the next CEO, you can answer by saying well you'd need to possess this skill set, have achieved results in various projects at various levels, your track record should look like our benchmark and so forth. "Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." |

I'm in agreement with your point about being competency-based and that career paths are not a chain of successive positions.
To be perhaps clearer about my mental image: When a person wants to explore a career path, the system would include the competency descriptions at stages along that path. Then, the system should be able to compare an assessment of current competencies (including those outside the current job) and produce guidance on competency development. In addition to the competency-based approach, there is the reality that some movements along a career path are highly competitive. So the related challenge is how does the person rise to the top of the list of those with similar competencies? (I.e., "What do I need to do to become more competitive for that position?") |

At first I would keep on remembering that the responsibility for your career is you.
Then after a soul search of "What should I be doing" seek out the best people in your chosen line of country and talk to them. Career Development comes down to identifying your special strengths, refine them and then seek out an environment that you will be allowed to contribute and grow. Nero |
