Leadership is taken -- it is a choice not a position or job description. Before you coach, does the person want to lead? If so, assuming as other have in this disucssion, that this person has demonstrated the initiative and abilities, then you coach to the strengths and needs of both the individual and the organization in alignment. The stretch should be significant and the outcomes should benefit from both a personal perspective as well as business impact.

I have coached many managers. I agree with the other posts, the individual has to want to manage and be a leader. Also the person should be open to learning and trying new behaviors. Leadership is definitely a learned skill, and I have seen individuals become much more effective in how they work with others, particularly when they presented with new alternatives for how to handle difficult situations.
