Does anyone have a good system for showing line employees a career map? We'd like to present it at orientation, so associates always know they have growth potential regardless of where they begin. Any help or comments would be appreciated.

What type of business is this for? By line employees are you referring to Assembly 'line' type work or Power Company 'line' work?
Is this an 'up-or-out' progression (i.e. required) or more of a 'selection and promotion' progression (i.e. if the employee wants to move up)? Depending on the answers above and assuming your company has a true career path (most do not have the foundation in place nor follow it by providing the training necessary), you should show the following: - Time to get to the next position, including any minimum time required in previous position - What skills, behaviors or attitudes are required from previous position (a.k.a. brief job description) - Change in responsibilities - Change in pay Visually, you can do this via a ladder, actual map, chronological timelines, pyramids or just a different 'slide' for each progression step outlining the information. I hope to help a little more once I understand your business a little better. The key is to take it from the employee perspective - they are going to want to know what they need to do to get there and how are you going to help them? Mark Johnson |
